Historical Black Newspapers is an excellent resource that provides information and perspectives that was excluded or marginalized in mainstream news sources.  These newspapers include articles, obituaries, photos and editorials.  Newspapers available through this resource include: Baltimore Afro-American, Philadelphia Tribune, New York Amsterdam News, Norfolk Journal and Guide, Los Angeles Sentinel, Cleveland Call & Post, Atlanta Daily World, Michigan Chronicle, Pittsburgh Courier and Chicago Defender.  Having digital access to the Pittsburgh Courier is an excellent addition to tell a more complete history of Pittsburgh.  It will be a welcomed addition to the digital collection for students, parents, teachers and scholars, genealogists and more.   This database is searchable across newspapers and has the ability to search by article types, keyword, date ranges, specific dates, author and more.  Additionally, there are birth records and marriage records, which makes it a vital resource for genealogists or those trying to learn more about their own family history.   The Pittsburgh Courier was once the country’s most widely circulated black newspapers and by the 1930’s it was one of the top selling newspapers.  At the height of the paper, it published as many as 14 different editions throughout the country.  It was one of the first black newspapers to publish both national and local editions.
